What is being done...?

Awareness:
Public awareness is the most important thing being done to protect people from Mercury poisioning. The public has become more educated on the problem of Mercury contamination in fish through means of labels on fish and numerous protests. Filtering systems are trying to become installed in major coal plants to cut down on the levels of Mercury released.

Below is a video from youtube.com featuring Oceana, an organization trying to raise awareness on the mercury issue in food.

Political Policies:
Despite growing concern on the harmful effects of mercury contamination, current proposals made by the Bush Administration will weaken health protection for millions of Americans. The Clean Air Act, signed in 1990 by former President Bush, requires all power plants to reduce their emissions of mercury by 2007. Coal-fired power plants are responsible for over 40% of all mercury pollution in the US and they remain the only mercury polluters unregulated under federal clean air standards. However, a recent proposal known as “Clear Skies” is a rewrite to the United State’s air pollution laws that will weaken the Clean Air Act. This proposal made by the Bush administration allows power plants to emit far more mercury contaminants for many more decades to come.
Also, Senator Barack Obama has introduced legislation to ban the export of mercury. The Mercury Market Minimization Act, as it would be called, would prohibit the export of Mercury from the US beginning in 2010. This would drastically reduce uncontrolled use of mercury in other countries.

Tragedy at Minamata Bay

In 1956 in Minamata Bay, Japan the largest case of mercury poisoning occurred. This was due to the release of methylmercury into the bay by a chemical factory nearby. Methylmercury is the most severe form of the toxin and once it bioaccumulated in the fish of Minamata Bay, health problems to humans were soon inevitable. Over three thousand people have died from the mercury poisoning of fish and over twenty thousand people have suffered from health problems. The government of Japan and the factory that caused the outbreak have done little to ensure that an epidemic like this would not happen again.

Below is a photograph of Sumiko Kaneko with her son. Kaneko lost her husband and baby in the Minamata disaster and currently cares for her son who was left in a wheelchair from methylmercury poisoning.

Health Effects of Mercury

Mercury can interfere with the brain and nervous system of humans causing irreversible damage due to the toxin acting as a neuro-toxin on nerve cells. Some health effects include problems with fertility, blood regulation, memory loss, vision loss, heart disease and tremors.

The toxin affects unborn children and infants the most. These children are at great risk of being exposed to harmful levels of mercury that alter how they develop. Some children contain mercury induced defects such as mental retardation, cerebral palsy, deafness and blindness. Recent research shows that mercury collects in the umbilical cord which goes directly into the fetus causing these defects. Also, milk-fed infants are at risk for the toxin due to mercury deposits embedded in the tissues of their mother's mammary glands.

Currently there are health advisories up to help reduce the risk of mercury in humans.

Mercury Contamination

~~I decided to write my research paper and create a blog on Mercury contamination because it is an issue not well known to people. This is one of the most widespread problems in the world and I feel that it is important for people to become educated on the matter.

WHAT?

Mercury is a toxic element that has been contaminating the environment for years.

WHY?

1. Sources of Mercury?

  • Coal Powered Factories- Incinerated coal releases great concentrations of mercury into the environment.

  • Mining- Esp. gold mines release mercury in the air from coal in the mines.

  • Volcanoes- Naturally release deposits of mercury into the atmosphere.
  • Dental Fillings- Amalgam, present in dental fillings contains a high dosage of mercury which can greatly affect children.
  • Vaccines?- Although no conclusive study proves or disproves this, thimerosal, which is a mercury compound is used in many children's vaccines and has been linked to causing autism.
The picture below shows the increasing trend of autism with thimerosal in vaccines.

HOW?

2. How does Mercury contaminate humans?

  • Mercury from the atmosphere lands in lakes, rivers, etc which pollutes the fish that humans eat. By consuming these fish, humans are exposed to mercury poisoning.
Health Risks for Humans?
  • affects the immune system
  • damages the nervous system, including coordination and the senses of touch, taste, and sight

  • harmful to the fetus...can cause birth defects
WHERE?

3. Where is mercury a problem?

  • EVERYWHERE...mercury is a world wide problem
